Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea and Sleep Disordered Breathing

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious medical condition that affects nearly 40 million people in the United States, yet only about 10% of these people know they have it and less than half of those are adequately treated.  It is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.  The tongue and soft palate collapse into the back of the throat blocking airflow into the lungs.  Deprived of oxygen the brain awakens the sleeping person to start breathing.  This cycle of falling asleep, airway blockage, stopping breathing, and waking up happens repeatedly throughout the night…up to 100 times/hour!!  The person does not receive the nourishing, restful sleep needed and unfortunately is most likely completely unaware that this process is occurring.

The Most Common Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Snoring Acid reflux (GERD) Teeth grinding
Excessive daytime sleepiness Mood swings Morning headaches
High blood pressure Memory problem Leg twitching

Sleep Apnea Causes or Contributes to:

High Blood Pressure Heart attack  Obesity
Congestive Heart Failure  Stroke Diabetes    Diabetes
AFIB (atrial fibrillation)  Migraines   DEATH!!

If you have obstructive sleep apnea it is imperative that you seek treatment!  Without treatment, OSA will take or dramatically shorten your life.  Fortunately, there are treatments available.  CPAP therapy (breathing machine) is most often used by medical doctors to treat OSA, but less than 50% of patients who are prescribed it adapt to it and wear it all the time.  In fact, many give up and don’t use it at all.  There is a great alternative:  Dr. Boscia can make you a DENTAL APPLIANCE that can advance the lower jaw forward (Figure 2) preventing the tongue from plugging up your airway.  You typically sleep much better, snore much less, and feel much better.  In most cases of sleep apnea, it is nearly as effective as CPAP in treating OSA.  And the appliance is covered by your MEDICAL INSURANCE!!

For any of you that have already been prescribed CPAP and hate it, wear it inconsistently, can’t adapt to it, can’t or won’t wear it at all, or just prefer to try an alternative, then this appliance is for you!!

If you have any of the above symptoms or are suffering from any of the above listed medical conditions you should ABSOLUTELY be evaluated and tested for sleep apnea.  Dr. Boscia can order a sleep test that can be done in the privacy of your own home and in the comfort of your own bed… you do not have to go spend the night in a sleep lab.  This test is covered by medical insurance.
