CARING FOR YOUR MOUTH AFTER THE EXTRACTION

I just had a tooth extraction. What should I expect?

We know — nobody wants to have a tooth extraction if they can help it. But sometimes a tooth extraction is the best path to oral health, especially when it’s part of an overall smile makeover.

After the procedure, your mouth will be sore for a few days. We recommend that you follow specific aftercare directions. This involves taking it easy for a few days and eating soft foods.

Most tooth extractions are relatively simple procedures, and the recovery can be fast. Here’s what to expect … and what to look out for.

Aftercare For Adults

Although you may want to get back to work right away, we recommend resting for at least the first 24 hours after your tooth extraction. Too much movement right after the procedure can cause the blood cot to become loose and put you at risk for infection.

Dr. Boscia also recommends taking pain medication as necessary, icing your mouth if it becomes inflamed, not using a straw, and avoiding smoking for at least 24 hours.

Aftercare For Children

Depending on the age of the child, parents may need to take note of their children’s aftercare instructions to ensure they’re following them closely. The aftercare instructions are similar to the ones listed above. Encourage your child to rinse with saltwater and avoid touching their mouth during the healing period.

Complications That May Occur After The Procedure

If the above care instructions aren’t strictly followed, you may develop an oral infection or intense pain. Complications can occur during the procedure as well, but they can be handled quickly.
